When we stared gardening, it was overwhelming how much we had to learn to succeed growing any plant. The most challenging was finding reliable information on cold tolerant plants suited for our climate. In those days, nurseries sold us many plants that did not withstand the winters. We were left wondering whether we were unlucky and bought a weak plant, or our winters were too cold for the variety.

Now, many years after our first gardening trials, we have found out which plants thrive in our garden.

We are now sharing these findings with you, so you will not waste time, money and energy with plants that simply cannot grow in a cold climate. Believe me, this time is much better spent enjoying growing the thousands of plants that thrive in our climate!

About the List

A substantial part of this blog is centered around describing plants that thrive in our climate (but that also grow well in much warmer climates). In the list below, we included all plants that we grow or have tried growing in our garden. To find out whether a certain plant is hardy enough, you will have to read the post. Alternatively, you can click on the Approved category, to select only the plants that grow well in our garden.

We are constantly updating the list. If a plant is not present in the list, it does not mean that it is not hardy. We just did not try it yet, or didn’t have the time to write a post about it. If in doubt, contact us!

On this page you will find a list of the main plant “types”. Click on one type to be directed to a page with the names of all plants of that type that we have grown. Each of these names is a link to a post where (finally) you can learn how to grow different varieties of the plant of interest.
